Levin, is the largest town in Horowhenua, and is less than 100 kilometres from Palmerston North, Whanganui, Porirua, and Wellington. The township lies in a tract south of the lower Manawatū River and north of the beautiful Ōhau River. Levin features a thriving clothing industry and is known for its factory outlet stores.
Along with several historic buildings, including the Property Brokers c1908 office, dot Levin's streets as treasured landmarks.
The town was to be called Taitoko for the father of Muaūpoko tribe leader, Keepa Te Rangihiwinui but ended up being named "Levin" after railway company director, W. H. Levin. Many of the streets are named after Māori members of Parliament.
The Māori presence was never lost and is evident today in the Muaūpoko and Ngāti Raukawa meeting houses at Kōputaroa, Muhunoa, Kuku, Kawiu, Hokio and Poroutawhao, where Te Rangihaeata is buried.
Levin became, and remains, the destination of choice for people wanting city convenience with country living.
