Welcome to
Te Awamutu (aka TA, Rosetown, The Rivers End, The Home of Free Activities)
The centre of the Waikato, and the gateway to the King Country, originally named Otawhao, Te Awamutu was renowned as the last stop for a beer. Known as Rosetown, our fertile soils grow the biggest rose blooms that boast the best colours. With a memorial park dedicated to the flower of love, you won’t find a more beautiful array of varieties than right here.
From flourishing flour mills and fields of grain arose our strong identity to the land. Agriculture, horticulture and export are infused in Te Awamutu’s DNA. Our lush land of milk and honey provides for export giants, international brands and employment.
A place of rich history, from the birth place of the first Maori king, Potato Te Wherowhero to St John's church, perhaps the oldest in the Waikato and known for its mountainous landmarks, Te Awamutu offers many a free walking and biking trails, not only to capture the adventure in all of us but to acknowledge historic and eco sites. Enter the mystical forest to the world of giant kahikatea, circle Lake Ngaroto, the hiding place of scared carving, Te Uenuku, now housed in our modern museum or reach the top of the world climbing Mt Kakepuku.
